Rising Costs Have Lucid CEO Eyeing Price Hike For Future Electric Cars

Electric carmaker Lucid is looking into raising rates for potential versions, its main government claimed on Thursday, citing “massive inflationary pressures” but reported the organization was committed to honoring selling prices for existing reservation holders.

“You can find an inevitability that we will have to glance at the price tag points of models that are coming out in the upcoming,” CEO Peter Rawlinson explained to Reuters, citing soaring nickel price ranges after Russia invaded Ukraine.

“I imagine it would be certainly silly of me to say we are hardly ever heading to elevate our costs,” Rawlinson reported in the job interview on the sidelines of the South by Southwest tunes, technologies and movie competition (SXSW).

“What we want to do is to honor and hold our commitments to present reservation holders. I consider which is what was ill gained in the sector with Rivian.”

He was referring to this month’s conclusion by electric powered truck maker Rivian to hike charges on present reservations and then reverse study course following people protested.

Tesla Inc has not long ago elevated car or truck charges in the United States and China after CEO Elon Musk reported the major electric powered carmaker faces considerable inflationary stress in uncooked supplies and logistics.

Lucid in February slash its output forecast for this 12 months to a selection of 12,000 to 14,000, from its initial target of 20,000 automobiles, citing “extraordinary source chain and logistics issues.” Its shares slid immediately after that announcement.

Rawlinson on Thursday mentioned the bottlenecks had been induced by a handful of suppliers for windshield glass, carpeting and some exterior trim sections.

“I’m tremendous disappointed because we are not gated by silicon chips, we are not gated by our capability to make electrical motors,” Rawlinson claimed.

Switching to diverse suppliers for individuals areas would compromise high quality, he reported.

He questioned whether Rivian would be equipped to make a gain on its pickup vehicles without having raising selling prices, given the charges of battery packs.

“I really don’t believe even we could, with the best know-how in the globe, make an inexpensive, sensible pickup,” he reported.

Tesla, which is creating its individual electrical pickup, faces a “primary challenge” in building it reasonably priced, CEO Elon Musk mentioned this month. “If it is really challenging to do so for Tesla, in spite of our considerably greater economies of scale & greater technology, then it is damn in the vicinity of not possible for other people,” Musk stated.

Rivian was not straight away available for remark.

Rawlinson also said Lucid has commenced on a prototype of in-dwelling battery cell production, including that it also has partnerships with battery suppliers Samsung SDI and LG Electrical power Answers.
